  • Donor’s Choose

Doing REALLY well, I have all my thank you packages in for all of my completed projects:  I have had 15 projects funded this year, and completed.

I’m ending the year with two open projects, one for game programming and one of the robotics club:  http://www.kweaver.org/

And I have 10 points for next year.  That means I can do at least one special project, two if these projects get funded.

  • Tutoring

Dallas News has an article about this: http://www.dallasnews.com/news/education/headlines/20120414-studies-find-students-rarely-benefit-from-tutor-program.ece and it’s something I’ve been wondering about myself.

First, I want to know how the students are being tutoring – my theory is that the students don’t need another session of a teacher talking to them.  It didn’t work the first time.  However, I see a lot of these going on at my school.

My theory is that the students need extra time, supervised by someone who can actually tell when the student solved the problem the wrong way and guide them to solve the problem the wrong way.

In my experience as a math teacher, your not as abled students don’t practice enough.  They also don’t have access to someone who knows how to work the problems.

I will admit to tutoring the above way at AP Sessions but those are different students with a different goal.  If I was running the program, I would tutor my way – give the kids extra time to work problems, supervise them so I know they are on task, check their answers and answer questions.

Funny that’s the way I teach and it works pretty well.

  • So how did I pull the footage off the DVR?

It takes a regular thumb drive.  Plug it into the DVR and search for the footage.  Select it and click on backup.  Unfortunately, only the DVRCMS software can play it, but I can use Camtasia to screen capture and save it (like I did in a previous post and for the Farmers Branch police.

  • Survelliance Cameras Work!

So about 4:34, we hear crash, skid. We look at the cameras and see nothing.  No damage.  About to go back to bed, and husband thinks to look north of us.  Sure enough, stupid car is still on Josey and not moving.  Call cops, go pull fence cam footage:

We’ve got another good view of it, but I haven’t figured out how to retrieve it.

And boy were the cops glad to see the footage.

BTW: stupid driver has no license and claimed he was texting. At least this one was a neighbor.

And the street was still dry, we hadn’t had rain yet.

  • Summer Plans

I’ve still got a few forms out.  But so far, my plans are:

    • CSIT Conference and present
    • Class at UTD (it’s free and promises to beef up my problem solving abilties
    • CS4HS at Carnegie Melon
  • Education Philosophy

My husband and I share the same educational philosophy.  We believe, that for the future of our society, society needs to ensure that each citizen gets the best education we can give them.

It’s simple in economic terms:  Every child that we can get to earn money contributes that more to society:  they can buy more, they can pay more taxes, and the contribute to the well being of everyone.

And here is what I don’t get:  why do people insist on keeping other people out?  There kids are really going to compete against I am talking about, and if there is a wider pool of employees, that’s got to be good, isn’t it?

  • Hacker Camp

I want to do this – http://jezebel.com/5900007/etsy-will-send-lady-programmers-to-hacker-sleepaway-camp-in-new-york but I also know I can’t physically and emotionally leave my home that long.  I think the two workshop trips I am taking this summer will be tough (for those who don’t know or forgot, we had a drunk driver drive into our house and we had to live in an apartment for about 5 weeks).

I applied for the camp and scholarship, and then after reading over everything again, I had a massive panic attack.

Haven’t talked to the organizers yet, but I’m wondering if I can’t follow along from home, and do some of it via telecommuting.

It would be more fun if I could get some other people in the Dallas area involved.   Anyone up for it?

I think it would be a good opportunity to increase programming skills.  Let me know in the comments if you are interested in joining me.

  • Surveillance Cameras

Added two new cameras, one gives a real good view of the planter in the park. We have a drunk land in it almost every year.

The other gives a very good view of the back yard fence which a stupid driver took out not long after we moved in.

We have a good view of anything approaching the house now.

If you have a need or desire I have an installer in the Dallas area and we have good sources for all the equipment.

  • Teaching when recording

I recently spent some time in a classroom while teachers were teaching with a recording system.  I’m hoping the recording system changed the way they taught, but I tried not to the same.

I can’t fault one teacher, as he was in a classroom by himself, with no students to interact with.  However, he spoke too fast, faster than I can even think for the first half, but did slow down, later which helped.  He still didn’t give the audience much reflection time.

The other two teachers did have students in the classroom, but didn’t interact with their audience much at all.

I know that the situation DID change my behavior some, as I didn’t call on students, and only took volunteers.  I think part of the reason was that I didn’t KNOW the students, so I didn’t know who to call on, and I didn’t take time to get to know them during the class.

I know if I am specifically demonstrating and recording something that is very short, I don’t take the time to interact with the class until we’re done recording.

    Something to think about.
