{"id":952,"date":"2009-03-27T11:18:29","date_gmt":"2009-03-27T11:18:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kweaver.org\/cs\/new-course-for-9th-grade-introduction-to-computer-science\/"},"modified":"2009-03-27T11:18:29","modified_gmt":"2009-03-27T11:18:29","slug":"new-course-for-9th-grade-introduction-to-computer-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kweaver.org\/cs\/new-course-for-9th-grade-introduction-to-computer-science\/","title":{"rendered":"New Course for 9th grade &#8212; Introduction to Computer Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For lack of a better name, I&#8217;m calling my new course &#8212; Introduction to Computer Science<\/p>\n<p>We have two problems right now:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ninth graders are not suited for computer science (well, TAG ones are but they go into PreAP Computer Science)<\/li>\n<li>We don&#8217;t have enough electives for 9th graders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Solve the problem: come up with an local credit course that will assist the students in getting ready for Computer Science.<\/p>\n<p>The ninth graders that are in my computer science course do not have these basic skills:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Type with both hands<\/li>\n<li>Write an email (or even sign up for an email account)<\/li>\n<li>Use the basic office products<\/li>\n<li>Use the internet effectively for research<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some of the skills I think they would like to have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take a picture with a digital camera and do some minor changes.<\/li>\n<li>Make a movie &#8212; especially DVD<\/li>\n<li>Update and decorate Facebook or other type of social networking website<\/li>\n<li>Write a blog entry or other type of web based content\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Skills I would like to them have<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>HTML<\/li>\n<li>Basic programming<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The good news is that I have all the software in the classroom needed for that.<\/p>\n<p>So a brief outline for the course:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1st Semester\n<ul>\n<li>Keyboarding<\/li>\n<li>E-mail and e-mail etiquette<\/li>\n<li>Basic office products<\/li>\n<li>Internet Research<\/li>\n<li>Products\n<ul>\n<li>Term paper<\/li>\n<li>Presentation about a topic for another class<\/li>\n<li>Resume<\/li>\n<li>See other departments about other products that I can incorporate            <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>2nd Semester\n<ul>\n<li>HTML<\/li>\n<li>Facebook page (or whatever the latest teen social networking site is)<\/li>\n<li>Personal website<\/li>\n<li>Programming with Alice or Scratch<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><P>As an on-going basis, we&#8217;ll cover ethics, privacy and copyright.  Will also explore technical jobs.
