  • Diabetes Alert Dogs

I have decided that I am going to train Dulce to be a diabetes alert dog.

I am a former drug dog handler and trainer.  I had completely dismissed the idea for years because the people who were doing it were completely had no scruples.  In fact, the Texas Attorney General was after too – and the man is in a wheel chair, so for god sakes, he has to be looking out for the medically disadvantaged, right?

In fact, I had stopped watching DLife, because they were giving one of those groups free advertising.

Anyway, it seems that we actually do excrete something that dogs actually can detect when we go low and when we go high.  Or last least those of us who don’t produce insulin and I think I live in that boat.

There are a lot of logistics that need to be worked out.  Where does she ride in the car, as I am absolutely against having any dog loose in the car, and how does she alert when we are in the car.

I’m in a plane right now, and where does she ride in the plane, there is no freaking room for her here.  Not that I fly often.

The rest of its easy.  I just have to go high a few times (not hard – and capture that – and go low a few time (harder, scares me to freaking death, who wants to help with that party?), and train her.

    Peace of cake.

Besides, the child desperately needs a job.

  • Flying

I hate @TSA  This time, they dumped all my belongings on the floor. A friend recently reminded me that if they were real cops, they would be listed in the Texas Penal code.

Fortunately nothing seems to be broken, but I haven’t checked the insulin.  All three bottles are in their factory bottles.

I did positively reinforce the young man who recognized my insulin pump.

Not a word about battery or CPAP.

However, a US Airways representative stuck his mouth where it didn’t belong.

    Tweeting about that.

  • Adjusting

Spent the full night in the new mask.  Was a bit uncomfortable at first, but stuck it out.  Should be fine now.

Now trying to find the best solution for my emergency battery.  Hoping to find my repair person!

  • Finally summer workouts

I had been doing physical therapy all spring so had cut down on my regular workouts. Just doing cardio on the days I wasn’t doing PT and occasionally arm workouts.

I am back to about 30 minutes on the recumbent bike, weights and working up to 30 minutes of walking in the pool which i have to be careful with, since i tend to go low there.

Especially since the gym is without vending machines. <snarl>

  • Best Sleep Doctor News

I’ve lost 10 pounds since I saw him in March.

  • Bad Sleep Night

New mask really bothered me.  Although it is much smaller than the old, it was hard to sleep in.  It always takes some adjustment, and I ended up taking it off and going to the new mask.

Everything else seemed to be good.  I put in new filters, new water tank and new tubing and didn’t notice a change in the smell.  Or if I did, the new mask was overwhelming.

    Will try again tonight.

    Even Fitbit agrees:

  • Sleep Doctor Appointment

The good news:  they are going to electronic records and they should be on the same system with the primary care and the endocrinologist.

The bad news:  my appointment was at 1:15, and I got out at 3:30.

But I have all new consumable equipment for my CPAP, including a water tank.

I have a new mask: Quattro™ FX Full Face – and it’s the smallest mask I’ve ever had.  And I wear a size small.  It’s also the easiest I’ve had to put on.

He wasn’t offended I picked a different primary care doctor:  I started out by saying – if a doctor goes into primary care practice because they want the same hours as their kids, they probably won’t work for a teacher, and he smiled at that – and said I picked a woman who was in the same office space as my endo and shared electronic records.  He said that theirs should be the same too – which means that they should have already had my medication list!

    Oh well.

I really like him and I expect to get a letter every year saying he retired.  He did graduate from my high school in 1961.

  • Not good at liquid medications

New medication I am hooked on – Riomet – liquid form of Metforium.

I started taking it about a 4 months ago, I know this because I just ran out.  I am not good at milliliters, and am not good a liquid medications at all.  My saving grace was getting a teaspoon doser, and I need to get another one.

I was due to get a refill, and didn’t realize how close I was getting to running out, but my first panic, was how in the heck am I supposed to fly with this stuff.  I’m leaving for California on Sunday.

So I had already emailed my endocrinologist about it.

Then, last night, I emptied the 90 day bottle.  Whoops.

I finally read the bottle and compared the doser.  Whoops.  The bottle said 500 ml, which is a 1 teaspoon dose, and the doctor had switched me to a 2 teaspoon dose (1000 ml).

He called right at 8:00, and has a prescription over at my pharmacy already and one on the way to Medco.  Unfortunately the pharmacy doesn’t open until 9:00.  Wonder what the chances are they even have the Riomet there?

  • Fill Last Week

    Had a fill last week.

I’ve lost about 4 pounds but it’s part of the same 5 pounds I keep losing over and over.

But it’s the best fill I’ve had.

For those who don’t know, I got a lap band in May of 2009.  I lost about 20 pounds, most of it during the surgical process.  The company that managed the surgery and after care has since gone out of business and there was a good reason.

Their first fill tech was horrible.  She did it entirely by guess, and it’s a miracle she didn’t make more mistakes.  As it is, I went around with a band way too tight for a year.

They finally went with a surgeon who charged way too much for me, even on insurance, but got me straightened out, and finally was feeling better about things.

But still have been losing the same 5 pounds.

This time I went to a new place, who does the fills for $50.  Forrest Park Medical, and they were great.  They also do the fills under flouroscope, and are very quick and good.  I was able to follow their instructions through the whole post phase, and am doing well.

  • @LAFITNESS How You Don’t Treat Customers

Walked into the Forrest Lane store and was accosted by a personal trainer at the front desk.  Seems he was offended by my workout apparel.

Was wearing my typical t-shirt, skirt with gym shorts under.

Here’s my issue.  It was AT THE FRONT DESK IN FRONT OF OTHER PEOPLE!

He should have taken me aside.

By the way, I’ve worn this same outfit at three different locations.  I know technically it’s against the rules and I’m prepared to take the skirt off, which I did today.

By the way, he has been instructed not to ever speak to me again, and walk away from where I am at.

And he’s a freaking personal trainer.
