Blog

  • What we have learned

There are a ton of Type 1 Diabetes bloggers out there, and they still haven’t discovered me.  That’s really okay, because that isn’t the purpose of the blog.

I haven’t done Saturday’s topic yet, I was busy showing my dog in conformation.  I have some cool pictures though that I’d like to share when I get a chance.

Conformation?  It’s how dogs get AKC championships.  We walk fast around the ring, showing off our dogs, toss them on a table so the judge can look at them closer (only the little dogs), and let them tell us which dog looks better.  And if you have a big dog, you get to run.  Completely subjective.  I have fun with it but the requirement that they can’t be spayed may get us out of the ring soon.

And yes, I can do anything I want, diabetes or not.

  • Awesome things

The most awesome thing I have done since diabetes is to continue to compete in dog agility with my dogs. I was diagnosed with diabetes after I had started competing with Marcie and made it excellent B with her. Also competed with Maggie in Excellent A and now with Macy. Dulce is coming along nicely.

Dog sports, especially agility has been my first experience with socializing with women as most of interests have been male oriented. I met my husband playing chess, for example. I am computer scientist which us also male dominated.

So yes, even over weight, older women who have diabetes can participate in sports.

By the way, learned something interesting yesterday. Sarah Ferguson (Duchess of York) is the same age as I am and married the same year – I definitely made better choices.

  • 10 Things I hate about Diabetes

    • I hate having to test.  Worst yet, I hate it when someone asks me “doesn’t that hurt”.  My answer is always, yes, I just poked a hole in my finger so I would bleed.
    • I hate having to stop what I am doing to test.
    • I hate needles.  Have since I had to have plastic surgery twice after a car accident.  I can’t look even when I’m doing the needle.  I’ve had a couple of insertion devices that you have to see the needle to the insertion – major fail.  Haven’t been able to even finish the box.
    • I hate going low.  Hate that more than anything, so I tend to run high lately.
    • Hate blurred version.  Since I am running high, my vision stays blurred, but not at the exact same rate.
    • I hate the diabetes police.  I avoid eating in public at all costs because of them.
    • I hate dealing with medical personnel who don’t understand diabetes.
    • I hate sugar cravings.
    • I hate having to carry all the emergency equipment around, and restocking it.
    • Oh, heck, I just hate diabetes.
  • Diabetes boopers?

Man, I sure can’t think of anything dealing with a diabetes mistake ending up funny.

Maybe if you have a sick sense of humor.

Luckily I haven’t ended up in the hospital but I have had a few close calls.

    So sorry, no bloopers.

  • A letter to the DOC

Bet most of you don't remember that I was first and have been the longest. My first blog entry was in February 2003.  David Mendosa has been writing about Type 2 diabetes longer, but didn't start blogging for a while after I did.

I haven't changed my domain, though I have changed software and don't always have this blog as my most prominent.  All those entries are still there!

For years I was pretty much anonymous and didn't say much about my personal life. My blogging tends to parallels what is going on in my personal life.  The more I blog, the better control I have.

I don't try to make money though I did sign up for some ad opportunities. Haven't made a dime. Don't care though.

For me, its about writing and about recording what is going for me. Especially when it isn't working.

Those of us who dealing with Type 2 are dealing with a life time of habits. Environment is tough to fight. I have been taught to focus when I have a challenge or opportunity and I frequently get caught up in them.

In fact, I am in the middle of one that has made managing diabetes a challenge.

So don't forget me when I get wrapped up in one of those projects, as I do keep up with many of you.

  • Admiring our differences

I am a Type 2 Diabetic (probably), and use an insulin pump.  Not many Type 2's do.  I have learned a lot from the Type 1 community, probably more from them than Type 2.

Why?  I am extremely sensitive to glucose in my bloodstream and it affects my cognitive ability.  I found pills very ineffective, and found dosing insulin didn't do the jump well enough for me.  I didn't like the spikes I got.

However, there is a strong possibility that I am both types, since there is evidence that my pancreas doesn't work.

  • Making it to the gym

Didn’t think it would happen today but the kids dashed out when the bell rang

My goal after the competition is to step up the cardio. My goal has been a minimum of 20 minutes and next week is 30.

And have gotten my weight workouts in.

  • Gym

Just made it. Woke up on time but couldn't move. Blood sugar was over 200 and just couldn't get going.

Was better at noon but high again now
. Hopefully the workout will help.

  • Ninjabetic – The B.A.D. Blog – The B.A.D. Blog – So Sick Of This

Sorry you are sick George, and it is no better being a "real" type 2. I got finger stuck by a nurse the last time I went to my primary care physician, and got charged $20 for it.
    Excuse me?
And yes, they get paid extra from the diabetes counseling.

Friday sickness made me give in and head into the doctors office.
Unfortunately my doctor was not in so I went to see the doctor I have through my
wife’s insurance. One of those big HMO group things where you walk in and there
are hundreds of people everywhere waiting to see someone.
