{"id":650,"date":"2012-08-23T19:33:11","date_gmt":"2012-08-23T19:33:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kweaver.org\/diabetes\/why-do-i-need-a-diabetes-alert-dog\/"},"modified":"2012-08-23T19:33:11","modified_gmt":"2012-08-23T19:33:11","slug":"why-do-i-need-a-diabetes-alert-dog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kweaver.org\/diabetes\/why-do-i-need-a-diabetes-alert-dog\/","title":{"rendered":"Why do I need a Diabetes Alert Dog?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve gotten several questions about this lately \u2013 from my mother to a Type 1 diabetic.&#160; <\/p>\n<p>Yes, I am a Type 2 diabetic but have tendencies towards Type 1.&#160; Whether I have both Type 1 and Type 2 or whether my pancreasis&#160; doesn\u2019t function at all any more (Will Dubois writes about this in books), I am insulin dependent and have been for over 8 years.&#160; Maybe as long as 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>I was diagnosed almost 10 years ago.&#160; I went to the doctor before school started and he scheduled a fasting glucose test for as soon as possible which ended up being a staff development day in September (I did the staff development in the summer).&#160; I remember going to the lab in the morning, drinking glucose and getting madder and madder every minute.&#160; Between two of the blood draws I went to Aubrey Hawkin\u2019s memorial site (an Irving police office and gentleman who was a good friend of mine and who got gunned down on Christmas Eve).&#160; That accounted for some of the mad.<\/p>\n<p>The lab only gathered the samples, the results were read later and sent to my doctor\u2019s office during the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>As the weekend progressed, I got madder and madder.<\/p>\n<p>When I had passed 5 people on Monday morning and just wanted to slap them, I knew something horrible was wrong and called my doctor\u2019s office as they were trying to call me.&#160; They told me to drop everything and come in NOW.&#160; I called and asked for a sub for the day.<\/p>\n<p>My blood sugar was out of site, they gave me metforum and instructions to attend a diabetes class.&#160; I did the next couple of days.&#160; My blood sugar wouldn\u2019t go down, and so we almost immediately went to insulin.<\/p>\n<p>That was then.<\/p>\n<p>For the past two years, I\u2019ve been so afraid of going low, I\u2019ve been running too high.&#160; I have been forgetting to check my blood sugar and in all ways possible been a bad diabetic.&#160; I\u2019ve been lucky and haven\u2019t had any complications, except for hypo-and hyper- glycemic unawareness.<\/p>\n<p>This is where the dog comes in. <\/p>\n<p>She is aware.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, it\u2019s a pain to drag her around and keep her with me 24 \/ 7 but with her around I can keep good control again and I\u2019m slowly starting to feel better.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s nice.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a drag to explain it all to total strangers.&#160; It will be interesting to have her on campus.&#160; But in the long run it will be better. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve gotten several questions about this lately \u2013 from my mother to a Type 1 diabetic.&#160; Yes, I am a Type 2 diabetic but have tendencies towards Type 1.&#160; Whether I have both Type 1 and Type 2 or whether my pancreasis&#160; doesn\u2019t function at all any more (Will Dubois writes about this in books), [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-650","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-blog"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/kweaver.org\/diabetes\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/650","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/kweaver.org\/diabetes\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/kweaver.org\/diabetes\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/kweaver.org\/diabetes\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/kweaver.org\/diabetes\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=650"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/kweaver.org\/diabetes\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/650\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/kweaver.org\/diabetes\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=650"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/kweaver.org\/diabetes\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=650"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/kweaver.org\/diabetes\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=650"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
