Big Raise is not the answer

Give All the Teachers a Big Raise | Alfred Thompson | Microsoft 10

I think that the biggest problem with education is that all teachers with the same experience get paid the same.

Teachers should get paid according to how much they attract students and by how much they affect school rankings.

That tends to shut people like in the foot, since CS teachers don’t tend to affect student performance as much.

But that IS how the real world works.

There is a school of thought that a teacher is a teacher is a teacher and all of them should get the same reqardless of what subject they teach. Another theory is that the pay rate should depend on how it is to recruit teachers for a particular subject (CS teachers win here 🙂 ). That is how the outside world works.
I think the problem is a confusion about experience. I come back to the quote about 20 years of experience against one year of experience 20 times.
If teachers were judged on how good a job they did and were at risk for losing jobs that might make a bigger difference than anything else.
