Things I’ve learned about Symlin

It’s not quite as temperature sensitive as they claim — I think that may be true of insulin too, as Medco treats both fairly cavalierly and they are sure careful with depo.

If you do much more than 4 symlin injections in a day, you may have gastrointenstinal distress. When I asked my doctor about it (who has had years of Symlin experience), he said, “yet’. I really think that is what caused nausa at Christmas and caused diarrah one weekend.

Symlin does work well for me for turning off the hungry, even some of my emotional hungrys. However, if I use it too late or too much, I am going to be sick to my stomach in one way or another.

It doesn’t work well on grazing food. It will work on the initial food, but additional food need more insulin.

It would be better if I didn’t have eating issues and could do better at controlling carbs. Unfortunately that isn’t true.

How could your Dr. have had “YEARS of experience “with Symlin? It was only approved by FDA on March 17, 2005?

Symlin was in clinical trials for 10 years before approval. Many endos in the US were involved in those trials.

I am 73 yr old female and a diabetic for 40 years. I am new to Symlin and my Drs first patient on Symlin. I use 25 units of Lantus before bedtime and have had problems since starting with the Symlin. I take 20 units before each meal and my Lantus just before I go to bed and my numbers are all over the scale. Previously I was running between 85/125 before meals
I have not had any of the so called side effects and will not see my doctor for 3 more weeks. I am hoping to see my weight drop but after 3 weeks I doubt if I have lost any. My average meal is just under 300 calories. Does the fact that I only take one shot of Insulin before bedtime have any bearing on the response I am getting on my numbers?

To Nita Cole re: 3/5/06 and anyone else on Lantus and Symlin. I’m new to Symlin, a month. On 20 units per meal and Lantus 38 units at night, plus glucophage and avandia. No nausea from Symlin, but rarely feel hungry. Being careful of what I eat and have lost 12 pounds in slightly over a month. Symlin seems to cause sweating and that’s about all. Wonder if it really works properly with Lantus?
