  • 2 Weeks – 6 Days

    Yeah, I’m counting.

I kinda of screwed up though, but I am not changing it.  May 1st, the day of my appointment is the last day of TAKS testing.  Since the Campus Technology job has been the final straw for me, I’m coming first for a change.

Anyway, getting through the day fine without Diet Gourmet food.  Had a bit of cheese cubes earlier, and have had 3 SlimFast shakes so far.

Blood sugar has been good but the main reason for posting – made it to 15 minutes on the treadmill today!  The longest before today since my restarts was 11 minutes and that was yesterday.

Got some good extra sleep so far today too.  Got up at my usual time, fed dogs, messed with home server and then went back to bed until 11:00.

So far so good, though I’m off to grill a steak and have it.

  • 3 weeks to go

My last medically supervised weight loss visit is 3 days away.  I called and checked to make sure they had the appointment in the computer and they do.

Ate my last Diet Gourmet meal.  Right now, I’m been going through the school day drinking and eating SlimFast and I would ate my Diet Gourmet meal when I got home from school.  I’ve done pretty well with that, but was very stressed out today by student behavior.  Most of our students were there and very wound up.

I’m up to 11 minutes on the treadmill today.  And TDD is down to 85, so things are going in the right direction, but I don’t think I’m losing weight.  I think I’m going to have to focus on sleeping, as I am not doing that well.

  • More Baby Steps

I am doing fine with SlimFast only at school.  Monday, the first day was the worst, but I just ate or drank another SlimFast thing when I got hungry or uptight over might being hungry.

Yesterday was better, partly because we were doing TELPAS online testing and in addition to my own classes was a technical consultant for the two people doing the test.

Today was even better and not nearly as hectic, so it’s doable.  I ate one bar and drank two shakes so that wasn’t too bad.

I am ready for food when I come home and last night was bad, but okay.  So I’m still at two meals, one Diet Gourmet lunch and one protein only meal, but doing SlimFast the rest of the time.

    TDD is slowly going down.

I am also walking on the treadmill again – only one session this trip, so I don’t feel like I’m trying to accomplish going nowhere all night.  I’ve slowly built up to 8 minutes.

    Getting there.

I have 3 1/2 weeks until the next weight loss visit.

  • Hypoglemic Detector Dogs DON’T!

I knew they were scam artists from the minute I saw them on D-Life, and it’s half the reason I don’t have much to do with D-Life.

Won’t mention the name, but there is a outit in Missouri, who have been on D-Life, who is being sued by the Attorney General in Missouiri because the dogs aren’t doing their job.

Now, I’ll go back and say that I do believe dogs can be trained to alert on hypoglymic eposides and they probably work as well if not better than CGMS system.  And since I’m an experienced CGMS user I won’t claim that either are that reliable.

I know, since I am a former drug dog trainer, that I could train a dog to do the job, but I don’t want a service dog.  Might change my mind someday, but I like having them as partners, and service dogs aren’t really partners, they really are the boss if you are going to be able to rely on them.  You’d understand the distinction if you have ever worked with a working dog.

And yes, when I did K9 work I had working dogs and agility dogs, and the relation isn’t the same.

  • First School day without "food"

    Baby steps

Today I left my lunch at home and only took Slim Fast Drinks and Bars.  Probaby ingested too much but I was a bit stressed over the experience.

Did it though and had my Diet Gourmet lunch when I got home from school.

    Baby steps

I’m hoping to stick to no more than two meals a day, and the second meal being protein only.  If tomorrow goes well, I’ll stop ordering Diet Gourmet food for me.

I have a feeling that the protein only meals are going to be my last thing to leave, but I’m getting smarter on those and buying protein from Braum’s to cut down on the cost and volume.

  • Life Sucks…

Well, it’s not quite that bad, but close.

I went to my 5th medically supervised weight loss visit and gained 2 pounds.  <argh>

I’ve had the WORSE luck on service with these people by the way.

First visit, they charged me wrong.  I found out about it right away and gave my credit card number over phone and was charged for the difference but the account was never credit — the credit card was but not the Medical Edge account and I’ve called every month trying to get it fixed.  It’s supposed to be today.  But I love what the billing gal said, "We’ve given you our worse service!" and they have.

Yesterday I was told I lucky I came to my schedule appointment as they forgot to write my appointment down on the paper schedule (it was on the computer right), and so they were getting ready to leave.  They really shouldn’t tell patients things like that.

And remember that the PA was a nut case, and the nuitrionist I really liked ran away with the circus (Alli circus).

But I have started walking again and doing light weight exercises.  I’m having a mild blow it day today as a result of yesterday.  Hit McDonald’s.

    Oh well….

  • POM Wonderful!

While I was in New Orleans, I got an email from someone who wanted to send me some Pomegranate Juice to try.  It arrived today.

I've had Pomegranate before — fresh from a produce market on several different occasions.  I'll even buy them at the local market though I'm sure they aren't as fresh as they could be.   I also love any Crystal Light flavor that has pomegranate flavor, especially cherry pomegranate.

This is 100% Pomegranate Juice.  Was not prepared.   A serving, one bottle is 150 calories and 37 carbs.  It was the 37 carbs that got me.  I expected and still expect the juice to be sweet.  It's NOT, it's very better.  Wonder where the pomegranates hide the carbs <grin>

Definately something you sip, not drink.  Probably a good idea to drink in half servings since I don't know about the rest of the world, but 37 carbs is a bunch.

    It's good!

  • Worried about Supervised Weight Loss Appointment

My next weight loss appointment (and should be my fifth month) is after school tomorrow and it is getting to me.

My scale does show I've lost weight.  Not much.

I'm still having problems eliminating my evening — mostly protein meal.  For one, it is just way too big.

On the good news front, I was able to walk on the treadmill last night.  5 minutes and I had to split it up 4 ways but I did get it done.  Tonight and tomorrow may be difficult since I have after school things each day (today is curriculum writing, tomorrow the appointment).

Other good news — insulin TDD is down to an average of right around 100 — great since it was right around 150.

  • Expanding my liquid diet

As of yesterday, I am only getting lunches from Diet Gourmet.  My plan now (and I'll ask the nutrionist about this on Thursday), is to transition to a full liquid diet in April.

One of the reasons I am doing this, is that I'm not losing weight with what I am doing and I have reached a really bad point where EVERYTHING hurts.

The other reason is that I can be ready surgery as soon as it happens.  One thing I've learned about the lap band is that you need to get used to being on a liquid diet.  My medical team wants you on a liquid diet for two weeks before the surgery and while you are healing.  They also want you on one before and after a fill.

So yesterday, I did SlimFast in the morning — and I have been doing that for the past few weeks — except for while I was in New Orleans.

I did Diet Gourmet lunch for lunch.

Then alternated between SlimFast drinks and bars in the afternoon and evening.

Until I couldn't take it any more around 8:00 pm and got some fast food chicken.

Still that means I've cut down from three meals a day to two.

We won't talk about what happened on Thursday when I did agility on a different night.  That and running into a bunch of my old dog friends wasn't good for food.  Something I am working on.

I was hoping I would get insurance approval after the psych evaluation. I had put two and two together and didn't get the four I was hoping for.  My case manager was really pushing for me to get my paper work into he and I was hoping it meant that she could put my paperwork in early and get it approved and that obviously hasn't happened.

I have a slight hope for that to happen after the next nutrionist appointment too, but I'm not holding my breath.

I think I am losing weight but I won't know for sure until Thursday.

  • Jury Duty

I survived jury duty today even with diabetes and heading towards a liquid diet.

First, I have a basal program I call "workshop", it basically means that I’m going to sit around all day and probably be a bit stressed.  To create it, I went to several workshops and played with my temporary basal until I figured out how much more of a percent I needed for a day like that, and then created the new basal pattern based on the old.  Before 8:00 am is still the same, and 4:00 pm and after are still the same.

I’ve biten myself in the butt by switching to it too fast, so I usually wait until I get there to turn it on, as I never know how much I have to walk to get to the workshop.  Most of the time it’s park close in the same lot and walk in, but this wasn’t.

So I drank a slim-fast in the car on the way, and didn’t switch my basal until I was actually in the jury room and waiting.  I checked my blood sugar in the jury room and it wasn’t bad.

I was sent up for a panel about 10:00 am and at about 11:00 during voir dire,  I checked my blood sugar.  Unfortunately I got picked, so when the bailiff showed us the jury room, I asked to talk to her in private after.  Explained to her I was insulin dependent and on a pump.  I asked if testing my blood sugar was a problem, and said I might need to eat something (by the way, I’ve been keeping a couple of Slim Fast bar meals in my bag for just in case, since you really need the Slim Fast refrigatored).

As planned, I ate my Diet Gourmet lunch in the car.

A word about security.  I set off the metal detector each time but what REALLY worried them was the handcuff key (I had to give it up the second time), and the electrical cords. Sorry, but I’ve got one of each kind in my bag for the consumer electronic items.  I also freaked out one of my fellow juries with them but oh well.  And they didn’t even get to see the laptop as I ditched it in the car after I was picked for the jury.

I was close to time to testing when the judge did a conference with the lawyers and tested them, but my blood sugar slowly was creeping upwards.

I also did eat a bar during one of our breaks, as I didn’t want to drop my calorie level too much today.  As it was, I missed a bar in the morning that I usually do.

All in all, it wasn’t a bad experience, and I’m glad I don’t have to deal with it for at least another 6 months. That’s our county rules — only one jury every six months.

Weird coindence, Amy at Diabetes Mine had jury duty today too, but hers was a lot less boring.
