  • Day 3 on CGMS

I’m not getting a whole lot of sleep Smile

The first night, I was getting high alerts.  Same with the second.  Also getting some lost sensor alerts.  I’m a low alert or two last night too.

    Still no skin issues.

My first sensor came off after two days – and I think it was because the trainer had put it in a IV 3000 sandwich and my hot tub had messed it up.  I think a single layer of tape will do me better.

Fortunately I have a ton of tape left over from my old days though I need to order some.

My first two days were interesting. I don’t know if it was the mexican food from Thursday night (done all the wrong way), or a bad set, but I finally broke down and changed sets on Saturday morning and am good now.  It is so rare to have a bad Mio set, that I am very resistant to changing them.  In fact, I can’t recall every having a bad set before.

I just pulled my data off my pump and you an already see I’m doing a better job testing.

I’m being a good girl so far, and not relying solely on the sensor – when I see a blood sugar reading I don’t like, I test and correct.

And I am really glad I pulled my reports as I see I need to record the end of exercise – not just the beginning.

  • CGMS after one night

So far no skin irritation and it survived the hot tub.

I am finger sticking more – the first point. I have a better picture of what is going on – the second point.

Suffering from supreme frustration as I had Mexican food last night, in a social situation – meaning I ate too many chips – and I am stuck with a high blood sugar. A dual wave bolus would have done me well. I got several high blood sugar alarms which I acted on. Blood sugar is NOT coming down, but I’m at the gym working on it.

Nice seeing the whole picture and not guessing.

Love having only one device, just wish the Revel pump had a bit nicer HCI.

  • CGMs, in and Calibrated

In fact, I am at the gym, watching the screen.

Tough needle for me. But I think I can do it, we’ll see in a few days.

So far the sensor isn’t bothering me. I was a bit concerned because I got a lost sensor alarm, but it calibrated fine and the readings look reasonable.

  • Summer Traveling

Famous last words: I am not going anywhere this summer after all unless you count a day trip to Norman Oklahoma and a day trip to Glen Rose.

This was to my counselor last night.

I was a bit bummed, because I had decided not to do two trips:

    • UT Austin CS First Bytes – this week
    • Air Force Base for my kids

Partly because of the walking, partly because of the hassle with the service dog and a lot because of my weight (back to the first one).

This is the second year I haven’t been able to do the Robot Mentoring Air Force Base thing – last year it was because my school district had paid for an AP Computer Science workshop. And the weight and walking thing.

Maybe next year. Or maybe I won’t need it.

But it all drove me to do the fill, which I’m glad I did.

Oh, haven’t said what I’m doing – one week in Austin on the state textbook committee. In a Hilton. They liked her at the Downtown one, so I’m hoping they like her at this one too. Hopefully the Wifi works better than the hotel I stayed at did. Of course, I have a hot spot so that shouldn’t be a huge problem.

And shouldn’t be a lot of walking.

  • Fill done

I now have 8.5 ml in my band, and they added .4 ml

I got fussed at because it had been about a year.

  • Getting a Fill Today

I getting ready to go out and get a fill this afternoon.

It's been awhile, but I'm not losing weight, and I've had a couple of things happen lately that make me want to lose some more.

Though I'm not super hopeful, as the weight I've lost hasn't let me do what I want to do so far.

    <sigh>

Don't get me wrong, I do feel better — and look better especially since I changed my wardrobe and my hair.  Both are still a work in progress, but I'm getting there.

I've decided I want my hair longer and with less red.  We'll see how that looks under the lights at school.

There is nothing magically about the lap band.  It's a very difficult process, and I'm not entirely sure I'm ready, but I'm going to give it a go.

  • Customer Service

I was talking with some old friends today about Dulce as a service dog and I realized that how businesses treat us has been really influencing my purchasing decisions.

It has come out of my mouth twice now:

“You know who treats her the best: restaurants and Nordstrom’s”

Now we don’t go to a lot of restaurants, but when we do, they always treat her well. She has been invited to stay for the evening and do clean up at several places <smile>. Once, an employee got a little too into my face (an El Chico’s), but I felt like it was in a good way. Most of the time, when people have a lot of questions, I find out they have a family member who could use a dog.

Only one employee at Nordstrom’s has looked at her oddly and it wasn’t OURs, it was at Stonebriar, and we were passing through to get to the Microsoft store.

Our Nordstrom’s, the Galleria, treats her exactly right, talking about her, not to her, and ignoring her for the most part. That’s exactly the right attitude to take with a service dog. Asking if they need water is great, but I have taken care of her already.

And I have not purchased anything at Lane Bryant’s since the debacle even though the district manager fixed the problem.

Its customer service people. And the way to handle the situation – ignore her. Like they do at Subway.

  • Dulce insisted on a quick break

    And I let her.

We did something really tough, went to a conformation show as spectators. She had done this before I met her and we competed and won together. I knew it would be hard, but also knew I wouldn’t have made it without her. I had to remind a few people and her that she was working and a cute dachshund even gave her its toy.

    She even alerted twice.

Finally, a friend had a darling young Malinois that she had to play with so I gave her a few minutes. I think she needed the brief break.

She’s a good girl and its hard work.

  • CGMS – Training is Thursday

I’ve opened the package and have been going through the training. I was on the Dexcom 7 almost a decade ago …

Things I like about the Minimed technology already – receiver is built into the pump reduces the number of devices. I lost my Dexcom once, when I was packing for a trip. It dropped into one of my bags. Was a pain, because I had no way of finding it. My pump is tethered to me, and beeps at me periodically.

Oh, and I dropped it a few times and people picked it up and handed it to me.

So far, I have never lost a pump for very long. I haven’t looked at the sensors and am not planning on opening those boxes until I see the trainer.

I have however, turned on and off that section of my pump and put the transmitter number in.

  • Another Medical Aggravation

Last year, my oby/gen decided to fire me in a very passive aggressive way – I saw it coming – it got increasing harder to get well woman appointments with him.

I get it – he has a thriving deliver baby practice, and he really can’t afford to treat menopausal women. But it would have been nice if he had fired me outright.

So, I couldn’t get an appointment last summer, and had to go to my new primary care physician who decided my issue was beyond her and needed a specialist. They found me a really good doctor, but literally at the last minute. Right now, they won’t see me until after August 17 (a Saturday) and I report on August 19. I won’t really be able to schedule anything until October. In fact, I just scheduled my next follow up with my endo for the week before school starts for precisely that reason.

I was told if I contacted the insurance company and got them to agree AND bring them a confirmation number, they will give me an appointment.

Guess I’ll wait until next June
