  • Being a “Good” Diabetic

I did some good diabetic things today.

You see, I live in my truck.  Especially when I am doing dog stuff.  And after the two car accidents, I realized it all needed to be better organized.  Bought some extra storage bins, the whole deal.

One of the things I found when going through stuff is that I had no emergency food.  Well, I did but man was it nasty.

So I grabbed one of my stashed bags, used to contain all the old nasty stuff, and got it ready to throw out.  Then stopped at gas station and got rid of while refueling.

Even found an all night Kroger, restocked the supply and good to go.  I have lifesavers, small packets of snack items, just stuff that can fix a low, but travel well.  Literally.

  • Car Wreck Day

Yes, I am having a car wreck day.

Since the two car wrecks, May 8 and May 26, both caused by the driver behind me, I have more stiffness and pain then usual.  Of course, I blame the original pain and stiffness on a wreck I had when I was 20,but still.

By the way, getting treatment was fun.  I have good car insurance, with PMI, and so did the second driver.  The first driver, another story.

I finally found an outfit that is located near where my husband and I met, not close to us, but doable.  Best yet, it’s on the way home from where I work part time.

They are good, got me feeling better yesterday, but I’m back to aches and pains today already.  Won’t be able to do more rehab until Friday, but at least I know what types of things to do to help.

By the way, I’ve been doing a great job walking each day and am up to 25 minutes!

As to the May 8th accident.  I still haven’t gotten a bill from my chiropractor, who was supposed to send me what he sent to my insurance company.  I need to email them and check on that and see if I can get a copy and submit it to the first insurance company.  They tell me I can get a claim for that, we’ll see.

The good news is that I get a check yesterday for the damages.  Only half of what the car company estimated, but oh well, they got off light.

Nationwide beats them hands down – they paid my deductible about a week after the accident and settled for the two days off at the same time.  I’m supposed to get money from my insurance company too, and letting the rehab place deal with them getting paid by the insurance company.

    Fun stuff.

Can you imagine what having good insurance is going to be like after Obama care, when you can’t get a doctor to take auto insurance now?

  • Tried a new doctor

Went to his office about an hour early and no one was there!   Seriously.  I’d also tried to confirm my appointment and couldn’t reach anyone.

They did call back about 10 minutes after the appointment.

Besides, while driving was closer, parking was horrible.  Mark that one off the list.

  • Diet Cokes

@scottkjohnson is addicted to diet coke and I used to be. He reminds me of my old addiction once in a while.

I got my lap band on May 23, and during my first year of being banded. I’ve had three diet cokes. I had another one right after my band anniversary. I haven’t tried a “real” carbonated drink, but here’s the sad thing. Diet Coke and Coke Zero now taste nasty to me.

Good news – though I can’t drink regular unsweetened tea yet, I do like Bret Michael’s Snapple Flavor. Haven’t tried too many others. Hope they keep it on the market.

By the way, the main reason I can’t drink unsweetened tea or water, is that my mouth is ALWAYS full of acid from gastric reflux. That was pre-surgery.

  • First day of break

Okay, I really went on break Friday afternoon, and made interesting choices over the weekend, some good, some bad.

I am exercising again, on the good side.

Will see endo this afternoon, and am hoping that we fix the afternoon/evening lows.

  • Goals for the Summer

I need to set some health care related goals this summer.  The last few weeks have been the weeks from hell, and I had stopped taking care of myself properly months ago.

So my first goal, which I set two weeks ago, is to get control of my blood sugar.  I’ve been doing better, but I still skip finger sticks.  You can tell how bad my day is as to how many figure sticks I’ve done.

My second goal is to get back to exercising regularly and I’ve got a good start on that — I’ve managed to get on the treadmill for at least 15 minutes almost every day.  Am upping the time this week to twenty.

I’d love to be down 20 pounds over the summer, but I don’t know if that is possible.  The lapband is funny, sometimes it won’t let me eat, and sometimes I think I need a fill.  Not sure what is going on and am hoping to get to a support group meeting.

Seeing my counselor has been great.  I plan to see more of her this summer, especially since the clock starts over again in September.  I know I’m going to need her when the school year starts.

  • Finally getting over the car wrecks

It’s taking two Celebrex, sleeping pills and a massage, but I am feeling better. Stiff still, but once I get moving it isn’t bad. My first problem was sleeping – I didn’t sleep at all Wednesday night in anticipation of waking up hurt, so I did Sonata for two nights. But didn’t feel really right, because I never feel really right when I take a sleeping pill, and I’ve tried both Sonata and Ambian. I had trouble getting to sleep Saturday night, but once I got there was able to sleep a full 8 hours, but woke up a few times.

Last night I was able to get to bed around 10:00 sleep in until 6:00, get up and go back to bed for a full hours.

Also did a massage for 1 ½ hours at Massage Envy yesterday but that’s really too much – I can do 1 ½ if I do it with my regular person and she does my feet and hands for that long, but not a regular 1 ½ home massage. Needed it this time though, and it took out the final kinks.

Will go back to school tomorrow, but have no students assigned. Have staff development until 6:00 pm – looking forward to that though, since it’s Kagan and it’s something I’ve been wanting to know more about.

Thursday will be my hardest day as I have to give a test in a portable, and I’ll plan that out tomorrow.

  • May fire my primary care physician

He has decided to implement a diabetes care program where his “medical assistant” takes your blood sugar and A1c without finding out whether the A1c was done recently or not.

Mine had been done two weeks before, so the insurance shouldn’t pay for his.  And of course, the “medical assistant” didn’t bother to even tell me she was taking my A1c.

She also wanted a bunch of other labs that had been done two weeks before again WITHOUT telling or asking me.

Oh, and the reason I was there?  To get treatment for a car accident and it had NOTHING to do with diabetes.  In fact, I go do a specialist for my diabetes/lipid levels care and have for years.

    <sigh>

  • Saturday after the Accident

Finally calm.  Seriously.  All day Thursday and all day Friday was dealing with insurance, with the injuries, etc.  It was absolutely out of control.

Today, all I had to do was to go to McKinney and get my hair trimmed.

    It’s nice.

My voice is still very raspy — it sounds like I have cold, but I don’t.  I am sore, especially if I stay in the same position too long.

I’m better though and I think that the massage will fix the most.  I tried the muscle relaxants my doctor gave me, but they didn’t seem to do any good.  Double Celebrex is doing more good.

  • My endo is a genius

Seriously.  Joseph Milbourn.  Kind of hard to get in to him, most of the time.  He’s tweaked my settings, and my blood sugars are running pretty close to normal even with all this stress.

No basal testing, just reading the log.
