Latest Experiments

After participating in a chat last week on insulin pumpers (if you are a member, the transcript is available), I decided to perform 2 Symlin experiments.

The first was NOT prompted by anything anyone said. It was prompted by the fact that I’m a Type 2, I’ve been dealing with heavier insulin resistance and lots of hunger problems. That said, I decided to up my dosage to 25 units. No adverse effects and my blood sugar is smoother.

This WAS prompted by the discussion. I’ve been kicking around this idea for quite some time, and since someone did suggest it in the chat and found it working, I decided to try it too. I put in an extra infusion set on Sunday and I’m using it to put Symin in. I’ve got it more accessible than I usually put it and plan to change it out on Sunday. It eliminated the “ick” factor of injections, although it still burns because of the ph problem. Of course, I take that as meaning it is working.

So far, it’s been really good.

you mentioned something about “the burn”. Do you find that it burns when you inject the symlin, because I do, and no one else has said anything about this.

I began pumping Symlin this week too – I love it. I already liked how Symlin made me feel, but the concept of it infused throughout my body continuously is really winning. Seems like I feel better though that’s hard to measure – the BG scores are definitely better. This is going to be an expensive habit, but one I’m not sure I can give up. I’d love if a study could be done to see if Symlin pumpers do better in terms of glycemic variability and quality of A1c – bet they would and it would be nice if managed care would pay for the pumping. I can’t imagine that happening, but I’m very glad I tried the experiment too. Nice one …!

I began Symlin 6 weeks ago. Side effects were mild, only occurring on the first day of each dosage change, but the nausea disappeared quickly. My concern is that Symlin has not reduced my insulin usage much (perhaps 10 units)and my post prandial bgs are really wierd. One hour after – my bg is around 140, two hours after – 170, three hours after – 300! I thought hypoglycemia was a major culprit!!? I’ve only gone negative once in 6 weeks and I am up to 20 units of Symlin. Any thoughts?

    Week 7
Bgs averaged 141 mg last week, but testing 11 x’s a day. Really want to see what is happening. Some unexplained lows one hour after breakfast Symlin, but likely due to activity increase. Occasionally afternoon lows, but not consistantly. Feel much better, less water retention, bloating etc. I’ll check on weight next week.
