Update

One of the things the CDE and I decided to give as a try with the Symlin, is to start taking it about 30 minutes before meals. I’m already finding that my post prandial bloodsugars are better. I was hitting 180 2 hours after a meal and am now down to around 130 which is much better. I was finding I was correcting about as much insulin as I was saving from the meal, which wasn’t helping.

I’m still focusing on my papers which is why I am not blogging much. I’m taking two classes, and I have the annotated bibliography done for the one class. It’s ready to turn in. I have the research paper and the summary written for the other class, I just keep picking a different section of the paper and making sure it meets the appropriate critiria.

I got a letter today from UNT about graduation, and I’m glad I’m taking a pass on it. You aren’t allowed to bring anything like a handbag with you so I can’t take emergency supplies. Yeah, I can find a dress with pockets and make Rich carry the bag, but that’s a pain. So it’s a good excuse.

I am new to blogging and don’t know what’s appropriate – so if I’m being a bother, please let me know…
I have not found Symlin to be the wonder drug that I hoped it would be. I’m going to try giving it earlier – the 30 minutes pre-meal that you are trying.
I feel like I’ve “done” diabetes as a full-time job this entire summer and am concerned about keeping up with this after school starts. I’ve had no trouble doing a Novolog pen pre-lunch, but adding a symlin hypo to that seems more difficult. How do you plan to manage this? I just figured I’d try to keep my noon carbs low enough to not need the shot – a bore, but the only plan I can come up with.
Congratulations on nearing the end of your degree! I did go through the graduation ceremony, but had two small children who had struggled through the process with me and wanted them to see that there was truly an end to it all.

I’m not on a pump so use a Novolog pen and for just a week now a Lantus pen. The Lantus pen is unwieldy and awkward to use. You have to hold the button in so hard – and it’s so slow – that I’m surprised I’m not more bruised from the process. It still beats a syringe in my book, but … not as much as I expected. So if they do get a Symlin pen going I hope it’s streamlined and easy to use. I’m not ready to go back to the Lantus in a syringe, but hope it gets easier as I get used to the pen.
I got a mail-order of Symlin in last week, but the syringes for it won’t arrive for another week. This leaves me short of syringes. I also try to stay ahead – but not as much as you do – my comfort zone has been a couple of weeks rather than a month. But I’ve been caught short of needles and syringes this summer more than once. The wonderful freebies I get from the endo don’t always include everything I need – that’s a comment, not a complaint. Like the amount of Lantus I was given with the new pen didn’t match the needles. The Symlin vial was a freebie, but came with just a few syringes. I ended up getting a pack of 10 from Wal-mart to hold me over, but these have shorter needles than I’m used to. I have a big red splotch on my thigh from the one shot I’ve given with these shorter needles. Don’t know if that’s a problem or not. If I’m still getting the same thing after tomorrow’s doses I’ll see about getting a needle that’s a bit longer.
I teach elementary music – class after class comes through my door with no travel time in between. I get a “30-minute” lunch that turns into about 20 by the time I deliver the class I have to the lunchroom and pick up my post-lunch group from there. That sure won’t work with giving the Symlin more than a minute or two prior to lunch.
I saw on one of your posts that you tried the ADorn bag, but it wasn’t large enough. Have you seen the “Courage Bag”? http://www.couragebag.com/Product.html# I ran across that site in a search, but haven’t ordered one. Looks interesting, but a bit pricey. I stuck it in my Favorites and will think about it when they become in stock again.
I’m so glad I found your site – so much information!
