Food Revolution – Jamie Oliver

The thing that bothers me about the whole Jamie Oliver thing, is that I think it a huge publicity stunt and that the hard work is already done.

Remember, I teach high school and I have been in a Texas (Dallas), urban school for 17 years.  When I first started at my school, they had pie at every meal and the neighborhood would order and buy them.

That was the first to go.  Two problems, the possible abuse of money and the fat and sugar in the pies, but man or man, they made fabulous Chess pie.

Then the cookies left.  They had huge-mongous cookies for $.50  Former students would sneak in at lunch time to buy them a few times a year.

I think the fry vats are finally good, one of the last to go.

Our cooks cook and man they can make a mean whatever they make.  Most of the prep work is done at a central location, but is fresh food.  They have chicken at least once a week, baked, and very good.  I will admit that the most popular items are pizza and burritos.

By the way, I don’t have problems with breakfast pizza – what is the difference between breakfast pizza versus a bisquit, eggs and meat?  It will get kids to eat breakfast, all the power to you.  It depends on the fat, processed sugar, and processed content.

Oh, yeah, and when I wouldn’t breakfast, my mother made low fat and low sugar oatmeal.  Just enough to bind the stuff and make it seem like a cookie.

Our vending machines are off until after lunch, along with any other food fundraisers.  In fact those don’t happen until after school.

As an outsider who hasnt been in school for 20 yrs, the thing that shocks me is the lack of “brown bagging” that happens. Does anyone bring their own lunch to school? And why are the kids having breakfast at school?
My wife and I had our chins on the floor when we saw the lack of accountability to the parents when it came to providing healthy choices.

The reason the children are having breakfast at school, is that many studies show that children actually do better if they eat breakfast. Most school systems are now feeding ALL children breakfast, in their classroom, in the lower grades, in order to increase test scores.
At our school, we feed anyone who wants to pay, and also free and reduced lunch students.
Sadly in our district the only nutrious warm meals many children get are served at school. Some districts are sending home bags of food on Fridays so they have something to eat over the weekend.
And yes, our students do bring lunch and snacks to school but man those packs are getting full, and we don’t secure lockers.

    Thanks for the posting.
I found your site while looking for information about diabetes. I noticed I couldn’t leave a post on “Had one of my bad diabetes days and nights.” So, here I am.
yes, I think that when shows like Jamie Oliver do come on some of the hard work is already done, but I also think that once schools, parents, and people in general get used to eating a new healthier way, they ‘hard work’ isn’t hard work at all.
Treatments for diabetes are one of the research studies we’ve been working on here in DeLand, Florida. Some of our investigational treatments have shown promising results, but there is we need to do additional research studies to test investigational methods that may help us understand the condition.
